The things that I want for my children

Last weekend I went to a baby shower for a good friend. It was a lovely afternoon, with plenty of tea and cake, along with a few games. Then there was an activity that really got me thinking - a postcard to fill out addressed to the baby with some hopes and dreams for its future. Some of the prompts were quite tricky, and it really got me thinking! Furthermore it inspired me to think about some of the things that I want for my own children.

The things that I want for my children

The main thing that I want for my children is for them to be happy. But there are so many other things that I want too.

I want them to be healthy, and to know how to keep themselves as healthy as they can. I want them to have a safe and comfortable place to live. I want them to make healthy food choices. I want them to enjoy exercise. I want them to have enough money that they don't need to worry. I want them to be able to keep in control of and understand their finances. I want them to save for the future.

I want them to have an education. I want them to enjoy reading. I want them to think about things more deeply. I want them to be able to entertain themselves without a screen. I want them to question things. I want them to challenge themselves. I want them to be creative, whether that's through music, words, art, dance, whatever speaks to them.

I want them to be willing to try new foods. I want them to seek experiences not things. I want them to step outside their comfort zone from time to time. I want them to have opportunities to travel and to see the world.

I want them to be confident in themselves and in their abilities. I want them to be able to avoid peer pressure and not feel that they need to compare themselves with others. I want them to not worry about how they look or what they are wearing.

I want them to listen to other people and give them their full attention. I want them to have people in their life that make them happy. I want them to have people in their life that they can talk to if they need advice or comfort. I want them to think about other people when considering their actions.

I want them to be organised. I want them to be able to work things out for themselves. I want them to be have the confidence to try and solve their own problems before turning to others. I want them to be independent. I want them to have lots of people to love.

Children playing the recorder

It's a long list, and I'm sure that I've missed many things. Reading it all through it feels a bit overwhelming, and full of things that I need to help them with and teach them. I just hope I'm up to it!
