The walk to pre-school

In January Harry started a new pre-school. His old one was moving sites, and it made sense to move him to one nearer our house, where he will meet children that he will be going to school with.

It's about a mile away, and every day since he started there we have walked in, or rather he goes on his scooter while I push Mia in the pushchair. Now that the clocks have changed, I've been trying to pick him up on foot as well. He's a rather reluctant walker, but when he does start school I'd like us to walk there and back, so I want to build up his stamina a bit before September.

It takes us about 20 minutes to get there, I make him jump off the scooter for the last bit along a main road. I'm really enjoying these walks. Because Mia is in the pushchair she is out of the way, and she's pretty happy to just sit there (unfortunately on the way home is a different story!). It means that I get a nice opportunity to have a bit of a chat with Harry without needing to entertain Mia at the same time.

He's sometimes a bit clingy when I drop him off at pre-school, so we talk about all the fun things that he's going to do that afternoon, and what his favourite activities are. Recently we've started playing a new game, which is based on the weather that day. If it's sunny then we pretend we're walking through the desert. We've not played that one much lately, instead we've been pretending to walk through Antartica and under the sea. We talk about the things that we can see, and when we approach a road, instead of saying "are there any cars coming?" I'll ask if there are any camels, or penguins, or sharks coming.

These last few months before he starts school are passing so quickly, and it's all making me feel a bit soppy!

  1. The other evening Mark was working so once the girls were in bed I sat down with my knitting and put Mamma Mia on. Slipping Through My Fingers made me cry. Quite a lot. Will I ever see what's in her mind/Each time I think I'm close to knowing/She keeps on growing/Slipping through my fingers all the time. Oh god I'm off again

    1. I remember Mum becoming emotional at that song when we went to see it at the theatre, I didn't appreciate it until having my own little ones

  2. We realised this a few weeks ago, which is one of the reasons we started our 'family Saturday' so that I could create more opportunities to enjoy my Little Man's childhood and make more happy memories for him :)
I still love the little things too, like our little chats in the car or on the walk too and from Pre-school, he's starting school too in September - time really is flying way too fast!

    1. Family Saturday is a lovely idea! Especially now that they are a bit older and will actually remember these things. These last few months are going much too fast!

  3. 'The days are long, but the years are short' so true. It's nice to have special little moments with them isn't it, might try this game with Alex as we have a 20min walk to our preschool too x

  4. Oh sob! I am terrible for feeling sentimental about them getting older. My eldest leaves primary school in June and I tear up every time I think of it. It really only seems a blink since he was going to pre school too! You are just so right about making the most of those days.

    1. I feel a bit teary when I think about my son starting school! I know that when I was little I never even thought about my parents feeling sad about these things, I was excited to move on to the next stage.

  6. What a lovely video - this is something I say to myself quite regularly - that the days are long but the years are short, but I still drag my two around mercilessly just trying to get through the day, I shall pay more attention, now - thank you for the reminder! :)
