It's not just about losing weight...

On the 1st of January this year I started dieting. I didn't have a huge amount to lose, but since having Mia the weight had been gradually creeping on. I used a calorie counting app on my phone, and we re-joined the gym. By sticking strictly to my daily calorie limit, the weight came off steadily and fairly rapidly. I'm not going to go into the figures as weight is so individual, but about a month ago I reached my goal weight. I lost around 11lbs, returning to the weight that I was before having children. As a bonus, all that time at the gym means that I've also pretty much regained my pre-baby fitness levels.

My husband has been dieting too and he's also doing really well, he's now firmly below his own goal weight. As part of our new healthy eating regime I cut down our portions at dinner, took out a lot of the extra cheese that I use in cooking, and stopped doing so much baking and evening snacking.

It's brilliant, and I'm so happy that I've lost the weight. I am definitely slimmer, I can fit back into clothes that I had pushed to the back of the wardrobe, and I've even braved the gym in leggings. I don't think I'll ever lose my wobbly tummy though, unfortunately between the two children my poor old stomach muscles were  left pretty battered!

But now I think the really hard bit has begun- maintaining the weight that I am now. I've already started eating more now that I'm not in 'diet mode' and a couple of cakes have emerged from the oven this week. Of course the more sweet things that you eat the more you crave them, and as you eat more your stomach gets larger and so you feel that you need to eat more. I know how easy it would be for me to put it all back on again.

I'm hoping that if I continue to go to the gym (I have to, it costs enough!) and keep weighing myself regularly I'll be able to keep an eye on things and cut back for a week or so if I notice the weight piling on.

How do you maintain your weight, do you have any tips for me?

  1. Well done for losing the weight! You did it pretty quickly too :) No tips. I exist on a strange balance of running stupid long distances, eating too much chocolate and a fast metabolism! It's not normal!

    1. I think if you exercise regularly you can eat lots of chocolate and such because you burn it off as you go. That's what I used to be like before children when we went to the gym all the time, I'm hoping to return to that!

  2. That's brilliant. I'm at the stage I need to lose a bit but can't stay away from the cakes. I might try reducing portions as a starter.

    1. It's really helpful to measure out portions of things like pasta, cheese, breakfast cereal and so on so you can see exactly how much you are eating. It's easy to eat a lot more than you really need. Good luck!

  3. Well done! I am at the plateau reaching point which is very frustrating so am restarting with a definite push on watching EVERYTHING I eat. I don't want to say I'm on a diet as then I start yearning for junk. So, I plan to reset my app. Stick to my cal goal. Raise the exercise levels again and see what happens. I want to shift another stone. We shall see! :) Apologies - I haven't given you any tips, I need some myself!

    1. Thank you! Good luck, I think that as long as one can reduce calories it's not too hard to lose weight, but of course it's very difficult to stick to the calories!

  4. Well done, that is amazing! I do the 5:2 diet. Eat normally 5 days a week and restrict to 500 cals on 2 non-consecutive days. It works really well and is the easiest diet ever. You shouldn't exercise on fasting days but that suits me fine :)

    1. Thank you! I have looked into the 5:2 diet (and been following your posts!). It doesn't actually involve as much fasting as I thought that it would, I could manage on 500 if I was eating well the other days. I'll definitely bear it in mind if I need to lose weight again in the future (which unfortunately, being realistic I probably will)

  6. You know my exercise plan, which is that Laura's school is a 15-20 minute walk from our house! I did the No-S diet for a while (no sweets, no snacks, no seconds, except on days that start with an S (Saturday, Sunday, special days and sick days)) but I get bored with things like that and can never keep it up. I just do a lot of walking then I can keep eating biscuits.

    1. In a way I'm looking forward to starting a school run, it's definitely going to help with my exercise! I do like the sound of the S diet.

  7. I have lost a few pounds recently (3-4 more to go!) and what works for me is smaller portions. I find it gets more difficult as you go on though, really hungry now.

    1. Well done! It is so easy to overestimate portion sizes unless you carefully measure things out.

  8. I started ZUMBA recently. It's such good fun and doesn't really feel like exercise. I hate the thought of the gym and looking completely unfit but at the class I go to everyone just jumps about like lunatics and has a great laugh. Give it a go. You never know, you might get hooked like me!

    1. I've never tried Zumba, although I know that they do classes at my gym. Perhaps it's something that I need to try out, it sounds like a lot of fun!
