Unruly, curly toddler hair

Mia's hair is a mess. We've not done anything with it as I wouldn't know where to start with cutting it. In complete contrast to my thin straight hair, it is thick and full of curls. When left to its own devices it sticks out in all directions. The day after I have washed her hair, her head looks twice the size.

When we are going out I usually try to tame it by scraping it back into two pigtails with clips around the side. This is much easier said than done - it takes several attempts and usually one of us is in tears by the end. I haven't managed to define a neat parting yet, and one pigtail is usually significantly larger than the other.

If Mia notices that she has clips in her hair then she will pull them straight out. I found three odd ones in her car seat yesterday which had been removed mid journey. She struggles to remove the hair bands, but by mid-morning she's been wriggling about enough that they have nearly fallen out anyway.

I've been doing my best with it, but I think I might need to investigate attending some sort of toddler hair-styling class, as you can see she wasn't desperately impressed with my efforts!

Messy toddler hair and what to do with it

  1. Please let me know if you find one!!
We're exactly the same. Seren has fine curly hair, which just ends up matted no matter how much (or little) conditioner we use. Tears during every hair brushing session, and no matter how neat we manage, by noon it's back as was!

    1. I'm glad I'm not the only one! Whenever I see other little girls out and about their hair always looks so neat and tidy!

  2. Awww she's adorable! I saw this yesterday and thought it was a clever idea. Maybe it could work for one on each side for the pigtails?

  3. Jennifer I have EXACTLY the same problem!

Have you heard of a Tangle Teaser? They are quite expensive but they work a treat with some leave in conditioner or the spray de-tangler (you can get that in Tesco). If you get the Tangle Teaser with a pot (looks like a flower in a pot) you store clips and things in the pot and it might just make her want to wear them and chose nice ones from the pot! Who knows.

I have paid at a good salon (that's a £45 do for the likes of us type of good) and it costs about £6 for children, they take the tips off and the last time the popped some layers in...works a dream too.

I feel for you and Mia...it's horrible when a simple brushing becomes a battle zone! Lots of love and post up what you do or leave me a message on my blog on any post....xxxxx

    1. We do have a tangle teaser which works very well, but I've not thought of trying any kind of conditioner or detangling thingy. It probably would be a good idea to take her to the hairdresser, it might help to give her hair a bit of shaping to it!

  4. My twins have slightly curly hair, their older sisters had poker straight hair and we get the exact same problems with bobbles, grips, partings, and everything being a mess by lunchtime anyway. Our hair-grips fall victim to some sort of black-hole which follows us round wherever we go. I am considering shaving all their heads until they are at least 10 years old.

    1. That sounds like a good solution, would certainly make things a lot easier!

  5. Ah! Cute hair! Scamp is the same but refuses to wear hair clips or bands and the result is much brushing (which she hates) and craziness. In the end we have embraced the birds nest look!

    1. Birds nest is a good name for the hairstyle, that's definitely what we have!
